Respect Life January 22, 2009, Catholic church bells throughout the Wichita Diocese will toll 36 times at 3 pm to mark the 36th anniversary of the Supreme Court decision of Roe vs. Wade which legalized abortion in the United States. Christmas Mass Broadcast Live
KSN-TV Channel 3 broadcast the Cathedral's Wednesday evening Christmas Mass. The first broadcast was at 10:35 pm on December 24. The Mass was aired two more times at 6 am and noon on Christmas Day. Sponsors of this year's broadacast are Via Christi Hospital, Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, and Blockbuster Video. What a blessing these broadcasts have been for the elderly and handicapped who are unable to get out or who have no one to take them to Mass. It's even a blessing for those who were able and did enjoy attending their parish Christmas services but wanted a second dose of peace at the close of a busy day. Local high school students who attend Trinity Catholic High School in Hutchinson were asked to serve at Mass for the Bishop. They were Patrick McFadden of Andale and Peter Hilger of St. Joe, Ost.

Christmas Program 2008
Country Christmas was the theme of this year's music program at St. Joseph Catholic School, Ost, on December 18. Students donned their cowboy/cowgirl gear to sing and dance their hearts out to a packed house.

The program began with the Beginning Band and Advanced Band performing traditional Christmas songs. The bands were followed by an enthusiastic and amusing group of Kindergarten carolers. Grades 1-4 performed a musical play reminding us not to judge or exclude others. For the grand finale, all 5 grades belted out "Must Be Santa." Their voices were so loud that the old man himself heard them at the North Pole, and surprised them by appearing on stage during the song. He worked his way across the stage before taking a seat to listen to gift requests and pass out bags of fruit and candy.

Most if not all of the audience hung around after the program to munch on cookies, sip punch and tea and visit while the children ran around playing. Some of the children even braved the cold night to have a snowball fight. The audience consisted of parents, grandparents, older and preschool siblings, aunts and uncles, retired citizens and school supporters from neighboring towns. Although the costumes and stage scenery were not as elaborate as in years past, the children seemed to enjoy themselves immensely and performed with confidence and poise. The audience, their worldly cares having melted away as they became engaged in the performance, left with a sense of peace, knowing their time had been well spent. As usual, there was the overwhelming sense of unity as this small community gathered to celebrate the season. This sense of connectedness which is usual at St. Joseph, Ost, is unusual in today's society.

Salt Mine Field Trip
Photo by Kayla Seiwert Budding photographer, Kayla Seiwert, took this photo on the 3rd/4th grade field trip November 21 to the Salt Mine in Hutchinson. Every student got to bring home a small bag of salt rocks like the ones in the photo. Students were told how to prevent their rocks from falling apart so they could display them: soak the rocks in cold water then spray with polyurethane.

More photos of the field trip can be viewed at Mr. Eck's wiki website. To get to his wiki, return to the Home page, click on Teacher Corner, click on the globe to the right of Mr. Eck's name. When the wiki opens, click on Salt-Mine-Museum.

St. Joe Participates in Christmas Parade and Reindeer Run
About 50 St. Joe band members, runners, and their parents were treated to supper by St. Patrick's CYO December 6, prior to their participation in the Kingman Christmas parade. The caravan of people left St. Joseph Catholic School Ost parking lot about 12:45 pm on Saturday.

Shortly after arriving in Kingman, all the students and parents raced in the Reindeer Run/Walk. St. Joe 6th grader, Merry Christmas!Ryan Masterson, finished 3rd overall in the men's division of the 2-mile race with a time of 14:04. Everyone running in the race received a white t-shirt from the Kingman Chamber of Commerce. D & A Enterprises, owned by Dennis and Ann Clupny sponsored the 2-mile run. They paid the entry fee and provided red Reindeer Run t-shirts for all the St. Joe participants who comprised about one-third of all the runners.

After the race, Ost people warmed up in the Livingston Hall with a bowl of soup and a yummy dessert. A holiday movie was shown while they waited for the 7 pm parade to start. Beginning band members and other St. Joe students rode on the float put together by the Home School Association. Steve and Peg Hilger provided the warm spot and expertise in float design while Joe and Cindy Voegeli provided the extra long trailer. The theme was "Unwrap the Magic of Christmas" so the float was decorated with Christmas presents and lights. In the center was a huge, wrapped present holding baby Jesus in a manger with the Star of David hovering above Him. The advanced band marched behind the float.

During the parade, fireworks lit up the sky on the south side of town. The businesses waited to turn on their Christmas lights until after the fireworks. Peg Hilger commented on the day -- the lights were beautiful, the weather was unseasonably warm, there wasn't any wind, and the moon was shining. St. Joe participants were thankful for the good weather as well as St. Patrick's hospitality.
